The Åbo Akademi University Foundation Research Institute was established on 12 June 1972. Its purpose is to support scientific research, primarily as carried out by researchers connected to the Åbo Akademi University through strategic research initiatives and research grants. Currently, the total funding directed to Åbo Akademi University through the Research Institute is about 3.5 million euros, which is used for i.e. the four internal centers of excellence, scholarships and project funding within the humanities, psychology and theology.
The Institute is managed by a board, which currently has nine members for the period 2016-2019. Chairman is CEO Lilian Wikström (Karolinska Institutet Innovations AB, Sweden) and the other members are Rector Mikko Hupa (Åbo Akademi University), Professor Meri Larjavaara (French language, Åbo Akademi University), Vice Rector Niklas Sandler (Åbo Akademi University), CEO of Åbo Akademi University Foundation Lasse Svens, Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö (Russian language, University of Turku), Professor Siv Björklund (Scandinavian languages, University of Vaasa) and Bishop Björn Vikström (the Diocese of Porvoo).
D.Sc. (Tech) Hanna Lindqvist (+358 50 321 9444) is coordinator for the Research Institute and secretary of the board since the beginning of August 2016. The Research Institute is located in Humanisticum on Biskopsgatan 13 in Åbo.
