The Donner Institute for Research in Religious and Cultural History is a private research institute financed by the Foundation. The Institute was founded in 1959 as the result of a donation made by Uno and Olly Donner. According to the wish of the donors, the aim of the Institute is to promote scientific research in religious and cultural history. The Donner Institute operates a specialist scientific library – the Steiner Library – and supports research as well as arranging conferences and seminars.
A new board for the period 1.7 2016-30.6 2019 has been appointed. At its constituent meeting on October 3, 2016 the board appointed Professor Emeritus Tage Kurtén from Åbo Akademi University as its chairperson and Professor Mattias Gardell from Uppsala University as its vice chairperson. The other board members are Docent Tiina Mahlamäki from the University of Turku, Professor Lena Marander-Eklund from Åbo Akademi University, Professor Peter Nynäs from Åbo Akademi University and Docent Mats Utas from Uppsala University. Docent Ruth Illman, director of the Donner Institute, serves as secretary for the board.
The Donner Institute is located in the Humanisticum building, Biskopsgatan 13 in Åbo. The Donner Library, which hosts the largest book collection on religion in the Nordic countries, is open to the public Mondays-Fridays from 9 AM to 4 PM.
